Silver is a metal represented by Ag on the periodic table of elements. it has an atomic number of 47. Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any metallic element

Silver has a rich history of being valued as a precious metal. It is used to produce premium ornaments, necklaces, earrings, rings, tableware, utensils and coins. Today, silver metal is also used in electrical contacts and conductors.

Silver appears in its native form as an alloy with gold and other metals and in minerals such as argentite and chlorargyrite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of gold, lead, copper and zinc refining.

Silver necklaces and other silver jewels are typically made from sterling silver. Sterling silver consists of an alloy of 92.5% and 7.5% copper. Sterling silver is therefore stamped 925. Sterling silver (925) is harder than pure silver and has a lower melting point (893 °C) than pure silver or pure copper.

To create a shiny appearance a process named "flashing" often occurs. Sterling silver necklaces can also be plated with a thin coat of .999 fine silver to give the item a shiny finish. Alternatively, silver jewelry can also be plated with rhodium or gold to create a sparkling finish.

Silver has been used in Australian jewellery from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Prior to the discovery of the large Australia deposits. It was often obtained from melting down old silver plate as well as currency. It was used in its near pure state as sterling or plated on to a base metal. The latter use was confined to cheap mass produced and machine made trinkets.

Silver was popular with the craft revival movement at the turn of last century both for economic and ideological reasons.

In Australia silver deposits were discovered near Adelaide, South Australia in 1841. In New South Wales is was minded near Moruya in 18964 and by the late 1870's and early 1880's small deposits were being words in the western part of the state.

The major deposits were at Broken Hill where silver lead ore was first discovered in 1875. In 1883 Charles Rasp registered a claim with six others known as "The Sydnicate of Seven"; which was publically floated two years later as the Broken Hill Pty Co. In 1939 when it closed down its mining operation at "The Big Mine" it had nearly 6000 million grams of silver. Other important deposits were later discovered at Mount Isa and Mount Morgan in Quenesland and Mount Lyell in Tasmania.
